Volos - The City of the Argonauts

The Argo 2008 - Retracing the mythical voyage

Specification - Length 30m, width 4m, 50 oars and with sail as per the origional 15 B.C. construction

Magnesia or more specifically Alikes, Volos and the Pagasitikos Gulf is the place where legend has it that Jason set sail in the Argo in search of the Golden Fleece. According to myth, Jason invited all the heros of his time to accompany him on this difficult voyage and he commissioned the carpenter Argos to construct the vessel which would carry them all to distant Colchis and thus began the myth of the quest of the Argonauts.

Today, in Pefkakia near Alikes, we have the replica of the Argo ready to set sail on June 2008 on Jason's adventure. From Alikes/Volos (the ancient port of Lolcos) and out to the Aegean Sea, over to Turkey and the Black Sea retracing this epic journey. I will keep you updated on the progress.

Mmmm ... small boat, small sail area, 50 oars, a long, long way and lots of people who are not Argonauts, best of luck ...
